County courts to close 1 day a month with no pay
“The closures will be on the third Wednesday of each month, starting August 19.”
Orange County Superior Court will be closed one day a month, starting in August, because of the state’s budget crisis.
The closures are scheduled for the third Wednesday of every month, starting August 19. The court will be closed two days in December: the 16 and the 30th.
“These closures of the Court are due to the reduction in funding for the California court system caused by the budget crisis,” according to a memo posted today in the courthouse.
Hearings scheduled on those days will be moved to days when the courthouse is open, the memo continued.
Courthouse employees will not be paid on these days, said court spokeswoman Carole Levitzky.
Judges — who are either state elected or appointed officials — will continue to be paid, but judges have the option to forgo their salaries on those days, Levitzky added.
Orange County Superior Court follows in the footsteps of Los Angeles Superior Court, which in May closed 600 courtrooms once a month because of the state’s budget deficit, which is now estimated at $24.3 billion.
Other public agencies also have instituted closures to deal with the public, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Consumer Affairs, the California Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Child Support Services
