Southern California heat wave is on the way out

by in News

LOS ANGELES — Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler Friday but remain 5 to 10 degrees above normal as Southern California’s second heat wave of 2020 eased up on its fourth and final day, a forecaster said.

No heat advisory was in effect Friday morning. One issued for most of LA County expired at 9 p.m. Thursday, and one scheduled to expire at 10 p.m. Friday in Inland Orange County was canceled.

Still, Friday’s highs, while forecast to be 5 to 10 degrees lower than Thursday’s thanks in part to an onshore flow, will be 5 to 10 degrees above normal, said National Weather Service meteorologist Todd Hall.

Thursday’s high of 86 degrees at Palmdale Airport matched the record high for a May 7 set in 1986, while the 85 recorded in Sandberg in the San Gabriel Mountains beat the record 84 set in 2001.

A combination of sunny and partly cloudy skies was forecast in LA County on Friday, along with highs of 71 in San Pedro; 76 in Avalon and Hawthorne; 77 at LAX; 78 on Mount Wilson and in Torrance; 79 in Long Beach; 85 in downtown LA; 86 in North Hollywood, Studio City and Agoura Hills; 87 in Burbank; 88 in Sherman Oaks, Whittier and San Gabriel; 89 in Van Nuys, Panorama City, Pacoima, Covina, West Covina, Glendale and Pasadena; 91 in Santa Clarita, Encino, Tarzana, Calabasas and North Hills; 92 in Sylmar, Northridge and Winnetka; 93 in Canoga Park, Chatsworth and Woodland Hills; 94 in Palmdale and Granada Hills; and 95 in Lancaster. Temperatures will be a few degrees lower Saturday, when only the Antelope Valley will be in the 90s, and then continue to decline.

Sunny skies were also forecast in Orange County on Friday, along with highs of 73 in Huntington Beach; 74 in Laguna Beach, San Clemente and on Santiago Peak; 75 in Newport Beach; 80 on Ortega Highway at 2,600 feet; 82 in Laguna Niguel; 83 at Fremont Canyon; 84 in Santa Ana and Garden Grove; 85 in Mission Viejo; 86 at Trabuco Canyon and in Fullerton; 87 in Yorba Linda and Irvine; and 88 in Anaheim. A cooling trend is underway, and highs will be in the 70s by Sunday.
