Man says he fired on someone who tried to steal pricey watch he was selling in Orange
A man was arrested after he shot at another man during the sale of an expensive watch in Orange Friday night, May 16, police said.
Orange officers were called to the 100 block of South Glassell Street about 7:30 p.m. on a report of a shooting, Sgt. Phil McMullin said.
Officers arrived and found the man who fired the weapon – the seller of the watch – nearby, McMullin said. The seller, who wanted more than $7,000 for the watch, told police he had met up with a potential buyer when the person grabbed the watch and took off.
The seller said he then pulled a gun and fired, but did not hit the victim, McMullin said. The seller got the watch back and the other person fled the area, he said. Police still are looking for the prospective buyer, to take a statement.
The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a negligent manner and possession of a firearm, McMullin said.
The exchange had been set up through an online marketplace.
Police recommend that people who meet up to execute private sales do so in public areas, never at night and not alone.
In addition, it is recommended they have a phone handy and never give out personal information.
“Most importantly, go with your gut or use common sense,” McMullin said. “If something doesn’t feel right, don’t go through with it.”
