3-year-old girl mauled by pit bull in backyard
“Girl suffered lacerations and puncture wounds to her neck and face, police said.”
FULLERTON – A 3-year-old girl remains hospitalized after she was mauled by her family’s pit bull in the backyard of their Fullerton home, police said.
The attack occurred around 7:45 p.m. Monday while the girl was in the backyard of her home in the 200 block of Costa Court near Santa Clara Avenue, said Fullerton police Sgt. Mike MacDonald.
The initial investigation revealed the girl and her mother took food to the pit bull, which was chained, and placed it within the length of the chain. The mother walked back inside and the girl stayed with the dog, MacDonald said.
The girl’s father and 11-year-old brother were inside the house watching television when they heard screaming. The girl’s 11-year-old brother ran outside after he saw “Fly,” a pit bull they have had for a while, standing over his sister, MacDonald said.
The girl’s mother was in the kitchen doing dishes when the incident occurred, MacDonald said.
Her parents rushed her to St. Jude Medical Center suffering from lacerations and wounds to her face and neck, MacDonald said.
The girl was then taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana where she remains in the pediatric intensive care unit.
The pit bull is in the custody of animal control, MacDonald said.
The family told police “Fly” has never shown aggression toward a family member.
The incident is being investigated as a child neglect case.
