Biker flies off desert cliff, dies

A 70-year-old Ontario motorcyclist died yesterday when he rode his blue 2006 Harley Davidson over a 50-foot-high cliff in the Mojave Desert near Barstow, according to California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials.

Jerry Silvera died at the scene of the 11:05 a.m. crash Wednesday at the Interstate 15 off-ramp onto Fort Irwin Road.

“As he exited the freeway … at approximately 50 mph, the rider of the motorcycle failed to slow or stop at the stop sign,” said CHP investigators who based the account on the report of an eyewitness. “The motorcycle launched over the embankment.”
