Man, 80, dies after crashing motorhome into signal pole
An 80-year-old man has died at a hospital nearly a month after he crashed his motorhome into a traffic signal, authorities said.
Pete Mihelich, of Lakewood, died Thursday at UCI Medical Center in Orange from injuries he suffered during the accident the afternoon of Dec. 13, according to the coroner’s office.
Mihelich was driving his 1989 Fleetwood Jamboree motorhome north on Beach Boulevard, north of Westgate Center. As he approached Anacapa Way, it appears he didn’t yield to the curve and drove straight into the traffic control pole, said Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez.
A patrol officer who was in the area heard the sound of the crash and rushed to help the driver, Martinez said. The officer said the driver was conscious, but was having difficulty breathing.
The driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
