Man who died in I-5 crash is identified

A Rancho Santa Margarita man killed in a traffic accident Friday has been identified.

Jose Elizondo, 67, had to be cut out of his Ford Taurus by Orange County Fire Authority firefighters after the car he was driving sideswiped another vehicle and went off the shoulder of the northbound I-5 freeway just south of the Junipero Serra off-ramp.
A woman passenger was hospitalized. The accident occurred at 2:17 p.m., CHP Officer Chris Goodwin said.

The white Taurus was traveling at a high rate of speed in the middle lane when it moved one or more lanes to the right, Goodwin said. It sideswiped a slower-moving Nissan Sentra and went off the road’s shoulder.

The Taurus continued up an embankment, through “a lot of brush” and went through a chain-link fence, Goodwin said. It then went through some more brush, may have rolled once or twice, and wound up in a bed of cactus, he said.
