COSTA MESA – Jessica Hoke was walking to work near South Coast Plaza last week when she was struck by flying debris from a three-vehicle crash, suffering severe head injuries.

The recent UCI graduate and San Diego native, described as a free spirit and music buff, died from her injuries Friday night – three days after the crash, said David Hoke, Jessica’s uncle.

Hoke was standing on the northwest corner of Sunflower and Stevens avenues when a 17-year-old male driving westbound on Sunflower ran a red light at Stevens, and then struck two vehicles, police said.

Hoke, 23, was struck by the debris and was taken to Western Medical Center with severe head injuries where she was pronounced dead Friday night.

Her organs were donated through One Legacy, a transplant donor network.

“She was able to save at least five people with her donation,” David Hoke said.

Jessica had a lot going for her, her uncle said.

“She had a great sense of humor and a love for music and the arts,” David Hoke said.

She hosted a radio show she called “The Exposure” at KUCI. She wrote about music on her Tumblr blog and for Downtown Incorporated, a blog that focuses on the arts and music scene of Downtown Santa Ana. She was employed at the H&M store at South Coast Plaza and was working toward getting transferred to an H&M in San Francisco or New York.

“In her short stay at KUCI, Jessica brought tremendous inspiration and joy to the station,” said the KUCI staff in a statement.

One of Jessica’s main goals was to experience life outside of Southern California, her uncle said.

In an August blog post, Jessica wrote about lounging in the Artists Village in Downtown Santa Ana.

“Not to be one those pretentious folk but being from San Diego and suddenly finding yourself in the cookie cutter paved ways of Irvine can often leave one with an insatiable craving for diversity. For culture. For character. And of course a good ol’ music scene.”

A memorial service for Jessica is scheduled at about 1:30 p.m. Friday at Gateway Plaza in UC Irvine.

“She had a lot of potential,” David Hoke said. “It’s sad that she’s gone.”
