by in News

A 19-year-old Costa Mesa man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the stabbing of a man who was out for a walk near Fairview Park, authorities said Saturday.

Gavin C. Delgardo Jr. was arrested just past 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 and was being held on $500,000 bail, Roxi Fyad of the Costa Mesa Police Department said. He is scheduled to be transferred to the Orange County Jail.

The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, Fyad said. Costa Mesa police officers responded to the intersection of Placentia Avenue and Fairview Park regarding a man lying in the roadway of southbound Placentia Avenue.

The man, a 41-year old Costa Mesa resident, was bleeding profusely from multiple stab and slash wounds to his torso, Fyad said. Investigators learned he had been out for a walk and was assaulted.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He is recovering from his wounds, Fyad said.

During the investigation, detectives learned the stabbing occurred near Goat Hill Junction in Fairview Park, just east of the location, Fyad said.

Further investigation led to the identification of Delgardo Jr. as the suspect, she said. It wasn’t immediately clear why detectives believe he’s connected to the crime.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Costa Mesa Police Department detectives at 714-754-5051.
