Man charged following Stanton-to-Garden Grove chase in allegedly stolen car
Authorities charged a man who was in custody after officers said he attempted to flee from law enforcement on Monday, Oct. 1 in a stolen vehicle linked to an earlier bank robbery, initiating a chase from Stanton to Garden Grove.
Walter Glenn Bennett, 56, was arrested and held at the Theo Lacy jail in Orange on $60,000 bail following a 30-minute pursuit, according to Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. She said he led police in a black Hyundai Equus that had been reported missing and linked to a prior bank robbery.
The sedan was equipped with technology serviced by a third-party company, according to Braun. It helped deputies locate the stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the Villa Motel at 11672 Beach Blvd. in Stanton. They waited for a suspect to get into the car and drive away at about 9:15 a.m., then attempted to pull him over.
The driver sped off, prompting a chase with deputies and California Highway Patrol Officers on and off the 405 freeway. He got as far as Garden Grove, but at about 9:50 a.m. the vehicle was commanded remotely via anti-theft technology to come to a halt.
“They were able to stop the car from accelerating,” said Braun. “[Deputies] were right behind him and the car stopped.”
Bennett was arrested without further incident.
He was arraigned while in custody on Wednesday, Oct. 3 and charged with felony counts of resisting and evading deputies as well as vehicle theft and attempted robbery, in addition to several misdemeanors, according to Emily Sudduth, a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney’s office.
Authorities did not specify his city of residence.
