More rain, snow prompts weather advisories across Southland

by in News

More rain and snow are hitting the Southland, prompting National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for southern and central Los Angeles counties early Thursday morning.

The organization tweeted out radar images around 4:30 a.m. of a large band of showers moving over the region.

The warning was first set to expire at 6 a.m., but NWS officials extended it for another hour.

“At 5:43 a.m. PST, Doppler radar continued to indicate rain-bands off the coast ready to move ashore. Therefore, have extended the flood advisory through 7 a.m. PST this morning,” according to a NWS statement. “There will continue to be moderate to locally heavy rain across much of the Los Angeles Basin, San Fernando and San Gabriel Valley.”

The rain may be to blame for a mudslide that is affecting the Victory Boulevard offramp to the eastbound 170 Freeway in Hollywood, leading authorities to issue a SigAlert for the immediate area.

Up to a quarter inch to a third per hour is expected in some areas.

Long Beach reported heavy rains Thursday morning.

The NWS also issued a Winter Weather Advisory for local mountains until 10 p.m. Thursday: Forecasters are expecting a snowfall of 2 to 6 inches in the San Bernardino mountains, with up to 12 inches on the highest peaks. There was no winter advisory for the Riverside mountain communities of Idyllwild, but rain is expected in that area.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 50s to the mid 60s Thursday along the coastal communities of Huntington Beach, Redondo Beach and Laguna Beach.

Pasadena, San Fernando and Pomona can expect similar temperatures. Further inland in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, some cities, such as Redlands, Perris and Ontario, will see from the high 40s to the mid to low 60s.
