COSTA MESA — A man was shot in an alley in Costa Mesa on Wednesday night about a mile from the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway.

Police received a call about 10 p.m. of a possible shooting in the 1900 block of Wallace Avenue and when officers arrived they were told the shooting may have occurred in a nearby alley, according to Sgt. Patrick Wessel of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Officers went into the alley and found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Wessel said. The victim was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

At least eight shots were fired, a witness told a news photographer at the scene.

Police scoured the area for evidence and attempted to locate witnesses, Wessel said.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the Costa Mesa Police Department at (714) 754-5252.
