Falling boulders, dirt and debris shut down San Clemente road

by in News

A landslide near North Beach in San Clemente prompted the closure of a coastal road on Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Falling boulders and debris led authorities to restrict access along a section of North El Camino Real from Camino Capistrano to Avenida Estacion, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Todd Russ. All vehicles and pedestrians will not be allowed to travel through that part of the street until officials determine that it is safe to pass.

Further north, North El Camino Real becomes Coast Highway.

“The road will remain closed to all motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians until a geotechnical engineer can evaluate the severity and impact of the landslide,” representatives for San Clemente wrote in a bulletin posted to the city website. “It is expected that the road will be closed through Thursday, February 14, 2019.”

The landslide did not result in any injuries or damaged vehicles, according to Russ.

He recommended Camino Capistrano, Avenida Pico, or the I-5 freeway as alternate routes for motorists passing through the area.

It wasn’t immediately known what caused the landslide, which happened before heavy rain was expected to hit the region on Wednesday evening.
