Here’s who reeled in the biggest (and smallest) fish at San Clemente’s kids fishing derby
SAN CLEMENTE — About 100 6- to 13-year-olds dropped their lines off San Clemente Pier Saturday, all hoping to hook “the big one.” The fishing derby was part of the second annual San Clemente Day festivities, celebrating the city’s 91st birthday.
Here’s a list of the junior fishermen who earned bragging rights in five categories:
- First fish: James Goodrich, 7
- Biggest fish (10 inches) and most fish: Noah Henderson, 12
- Smallest fish (6 inches): Chad Dominguez
- Most unusual (rockfish): Jack Troutman, 12
The derby kicked off with San Clemente Mayor Steve Swartz and students from Las Palmas Elementary singing the National Anthem. In addition to fishing, activities included the Fun on the Run truck, Frenchie “the bubble guy” blowing life-sized bubbles and Mane Event, which fashioned mohawks and mermaid hair for the kiddos.
Following the derby, residents were invited for a free Recreation Swim at the Ole Hanson Beach Club.
