Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has issued a one-year moratorium on home policy non-renewals and cancellations in the Pacific Palisades and the San Gabriel Valley’s Eaton fire zones.

It is expected to take some time to determine the death toll from this week’s Los Angeles firestorms.

With the Palisades fire raging nearby and firefighters stretched thin, residents of the community have taken it upon themselves to stomp out embers and safeguard homes.

Some Altadena residents returned to find their homes standing, while others are left reeling from the immense loss.

Juan Sierra, 33, who was arrested Thursday on a suspected probation violation, is identified as a ‘person of interest’ in the Kenneth fire.

Carvalho said that while weather conditions looked promising, there are too many uncertainties regarding wind conditions, air quality and the control of fires

Even as fire turned Santa Monica an apocalyptic shade of orange, hired hands went about their business as if it were just another day on the job. “We gotta pay bills,” said one UPS driver. “It’s not like they’re gonna pay us to stop working and leave.”

The state’s largest school district will keep campuses closed Friday as students and employees grapple with evacuations, power outages and poor air quality.
